Chapter Eight
STOP! I CANâT TAKE ANY MORE
Then those who sing as well as those who play the flutes shall say, âAll my springs of joy are in youâ (Psalm 87:7).
If there is no laughter, Jesus has gone somewhere else. If there is no joy and freedom, it is not a church: it is simply a crowd of melancholy people basking in a religious neurosis. If there is no celebration, there is no real worship. âSTEVE BROWN
I grew up in a home filled with music. My dad was a musician. Many times my dad, mom, and my relatives would get together to sing and play for hours. My grandfather was known as the âsinging evangelist.â I even have a picture of my great-grandfather playing his fiddle.
Music has been a part of my family legacy as far back as the Revolutionary War. My sixth-great-grandfather was a soldier in George Washingtonâs brigade. Not only was he a rifleman, but he was also the fifer for the brigade. If youâve ever seen the picture of the drummer, the flag carrier, and the fife player marching together, then youâve seen a representation of my relative.
I remember seeing my dad come to life every time he picked up his guitar and began to play. Though he was a guitarist for Roy Acuff, the father of the Grand Ole Opry, he decided not to go down that path. My dad became content with recording a few albums, writing songs, playing at home or church, and spending time raising a family.
This same passion for music was passed on to me, an inheritance for which I am very grateful. I began playing the guitar when I was twelve years old. A few years later I joined my first rock band. I loved playing the songs of the day, but the Holy Spirit compelled me to commit my talent to serving Jesus.
In answer to that compulsion, two of my friends and I began what was one of the first contemporary Christian bands in the Southeastern United States. At that time the thought of playing contemporary music in a church was unheard of. It was hard to walk into a church with a beard and long hair, much less a full set-up that included amps, speakers, and (God forbid) drums.
HOLY LAUGHTER
While I was a part of this band I had an encounter that is as real to me now as it was years ago when I first experienced it. It was during a tour in the New Jersey and New York area. We had been asked to come and minister at a Baptist youth convention and share what the Lord had been doing in our lives as well as in our music. The meetings were located on a college campus and so we stayed in the dormitory.
The band, which at this time had five members, sat in a circle on the floor of the dorm room and enjoyed spending time in prayer and worship. As we began, I started to sense something come over me that was as real as the rain outside.
